Specifying Shilajit Extract

Purification is the specification that matters most for shilajit: ask for lead, arsenic, cadmium and mercury as figures by ICP-MS, not a line reading “complies”. State the fulvic acid method with the percentage, because gravimetric protocols differ.

Questions about Shilajit Extract

What is Shilajit Extract?

Shilajit Extract is produced from shilajit (Asphaltum punjabianum), a blackish-brown mineral exudate that seeps from high-altitude rock in the Himalayas. It is not a plant extract: it forms from slowly decomposed plant and microbial matter and is purified before it is standardised.

What standardisation levels are available?

Shilajit Extract can be supplied standardised to fulvic acid, including commonly requested 20%, 50% and 70% grades, subject to the agreed specification and availability. Water-soluble grades and extracts specified on dibenzo-α-pyrones (DBPs) can be discussed on request.

Why are purification and heavy-metal testing important for Shilajit?

Raw shilajit forms in mineral-rich rock and can carry lead, arsenic, cadmium and mercury. Purification removes insoluble matter, and each batch is tested by ICP-MS, with the result for each element reported against the agreed limits.

Why should the fulvic acid method be stated alongside the percentage?

Fulvic acid is a complex humic fraction measured gravimetrically, and different protocols can give different results for the same material. The percentage and the method should be read together when comparing grades or suppliers.

Can Shilajit Extract be supplied against an existing specification?

Yes. Buyers can provide their required fulvic acid level, analytical method, heavy-metal limits, solubility and documentation requirements for review before quotation. The regulatory status of shilajit differs between markets, so the intended market should be confirmed at enquiry.
