Cineole and terpinyl acetate by GC

Solvent-extracted from the decorticated seed of green cardamom, Elettaria cardamomum. Volatile oil, 1,8-cineole and α-terpinyl acetate are declared on every batch, so the aroma is specified rather than assumed.

Specifying Cardamom Extract

Specify the balance of 1,8-cineole to α-terpinyl acetate, not the volatile oil alone. Two batches with the same volatile oil can smell quite different, and a cineole-heavy material reads closer to eucalyptus than to cardamom.

Questions about Cardamom Extract

What is the botanical source of Cardamom Extract?

Cardamom Extract is derived from the seed of green cardamom, Elettaria cardamomum. Large black cardamom (Amomum subulatum) is a different plant with a smoky profile and is not a substitute.

In what forms can Cardamom Extract be supplied?

Cardamom Extract is supplied as an oleoresin, a viscous oil-soluble liquid, with dispersible powder grades for dry blends and beverage mixes. Essential oil and higher-volatile grades can be quoted on request, subject to the agreed specification and availability.

Which parameters define the quality of Cardamom Extract?

The aroma depends on the balance between 1,8-cineole and α-terpinyl acetate, so both should be specified by GC alongside the volatile oil content. Residual solvent, moisture and contaminant limits complete the specification.

Is residual solvent tested?

Yes. The extraction solvent is named on the certificate of analysis and residual solvent is tested by GC on every batch. Buyers should confirm that the solvent is permitted for their market and application.

Can Cardamom Extract be supplied against an existing flavour specification?

Yes. Buyers can provide their required volatile oil content, GC profile, carrier for dispersible grades, solubility and documentation requirements for review before quotation.
