Grades and standardisation

Specifying Amla Extract

The extract is standardised on tannins, not vitamin C. Ascorbic acid in the fresh fruit does not survive drying at fruit levels, so a declared vitamin C content needs its own specification.

Questions about Amla Extract

What is the botanical source of Amla Extract?

Amla Extract is derived from the fruit of Phyllanthus emblica L., commonly known as Indian Gooseberry.

How can Amla Extract be standardised?

Amla Extract can be supplied against different botanical specifications. Depending on the grade, standardisation may be based on constituents such as total tannins or another agreed marker. The marker, required level and analytical method should be defined before purchase.

Is Amla Extract the same as Amla Powder?

No. Amla Powder is milled fruit material, while Amla Extract is a concentrated preparation produced through an extraction process and may be standardised to a defined constituent.

What quality information can be provided?

The applicable specification and batch documentation can include parameters such as botanical identity, marker assay, physical characteristics, microbiological requirements and relevant contaminant limits, depending on the agreed grade.

Can Amla Extract be supplied against a buyer-specific specification?

Yes. An existing specification can be reviewed for botanical identity, standardisation, analytical method, physical requirements and documentation before quotation.
