Specifying Cinnamon Extract

Name the species before the strength. Cassia bark carries coumarin at levels that matter in a daily-dose product and Ceylon only traces; no process removes it, so a low-coumarin requirement is a Ceylon requirement.

Questions about Cinnamon Extract

What is the botanical source of Cinnamon Extract?

Cinnamon Extract is derived from the dried bark of Cinnamomum verum (Ceylon cinnamon) or Cinnamomum cassia (Cassia). The species is declared for every batch.

What is the difference between Ceylon and Cassia grades?

Both are cinnamon, but Cassia bark contains coumarin at levels that matter in daily-dose products, while Ceylon contains only traces. The coumarin comes from the bark itself, so a low-coumarin requirement is met by specifying Ceylon.

What standardisation levels are available?

Cinnamon Extract can be supplied standardised to polyphenols, commonly not less than 20% by UV, or to cinnamaldehyde by HPLC for flavour-led uses. Water-soluble and ratio extracts can be discussed, subject to the agreed specification and availability.

What quality parameters should be specified?

Depending on the application, relevant parameters can include species, marker assay and method, coumarin content, particle size, moisture, residual solvent, microbiological quality and contaminant limits.

Can you supply Cinnamon Extract to an existing specification?

Yes. Buyers can provide their required species, standardisation, coumarin limit, physical parameters and documentation requirements for review before quotation.
